A worldwide approach to welfare training resources

June, 2024

FAI is working to improve the lives of farmed aquatic animals, no matter where they are in the world. FAI COO MURILO QUINTILIANO explains how our commitment to expanding the range of native-language welfare training resources we offer is helping us achieve this.

Webinar Training with FAI Farms and Spring Genetics

Aquaculture workers have the greatest impact on the welfare of animals in their care, so we aim to make welfare information available to as many of them as possible.

Whether working on a shrimp farm in Thailand or assessing tilapia welfare in Brazil, we provide high-quality learning materials and training courses to improve the wellbeing and performance of many farmed aquatic animals.

But we won’t reach and influence the wellbeing of as many species if we only produce training resources in English.

Ever since we started our global drive to improve tilapia welfare standards in Brazil, we’ve been working to create online training resources accessible anywhere in the world and in the native languages of regions most in need of them; be that Portuguese tilapia training courses for Brazil or Thai shrimp welfare resources for Thailand, alongside others in English and Spanish.

Supporting the Chinese aquaculture sector

Most recently, we’ve added Chinese to the list.

With most of the world’s 5.8 million farmed grass carp coming from China, we have expanded the availability of our Chinese-language welfare-focused training resources.

We’ve now launched a Grass Carp Welfare Indicators course in Chinese on the FAI Academy website. Focused on the welfare indicators of nutrition, health, environment, and behaviour, the course also highlights how farmers can identify and rectify welfare issues on their farms. It helps Chinese grass carp farmers incorporate improved welfare practices into daily working routines, resulting in happier, healthier and more productive fish.

We have also released a Chinese version of our free, online Grass Carp Aquaculture Manual. Written for both novice and expert grass carp farmers, the manual provides information about enhancing the wellbeing and performance of grass carp, including feeding strategies, broodstock management, reproductive behaviours and farming techniques.

However, we’re not stopping there.

Egypt is the top tilapia producer in Africa, so through the work we’re doing in the region with our Tilapia Welfare Project, we’ll be introducing a range of Arabic language resources.

By interpreting the latest scientific research and presenting this to aquaculture workers in their native languages, we increase the accessibility of better welfare management practices. This not only improves the wellbeing for the aquatic species being farmed, but also the profitability and sustainability of aquaculture businesses – irrespective of location.
